I've Been Bad

19/2/2017

Last year I did this whole post about how I was going to be here more regularly, how I was going to try and post more often. Then I immediately disappeared, as though uttering the words somehow invoked a curse and turned me into a frog. But that only happens to princes, I believe, so I don’t have an excuse.

I do have reasons, though. I’ve been travelling the world a bit and writing a lot. I’ve put together a plan for this year that I think you’ll like (oh, please like it, please like it), which I’ll share with you in another post. It’s kind of ambitious and I’m excited to see how it goes.

For now, though, let me tell you what I was up to at the end of 2016. It's image heavy, so I'll see you after the jump:

My wife and I spend a lot of time travelling. If we go for a year without seeing somewhere new it feels like there's something missing in our lives. Last year was a good year for me (thanks in part to you guys), and this is what we did to cap it all off.

Beautiful beach, calm water, high cliffs to defend against dragon attacks.

Just taking a drive around the neighbourhood.

We walked down this lovely little path to swim in a waterfall. This was the path on the way back, after nature decided she hated us. Still very pretty.

The commute to work in the morning.

Bangkok, from the top of a building just after sunset. We've been to this city so many times. It was the first place we went on our first major - 2 month - trip back when we were barely adults. Watching things change, and finding the things that have stayed the same, is one of the nice things about going back to a place every few years.
Picture
Our visit coincided with the unfortunate death of the king. Shrines like the one in front of this temple were everywhere, and there was a more sombre mood to the city than usual.
Picture
Bangkok again. This place makes the best pad thai in the world. It's great anyway, but they wrap it in egg and this somehow makes it so much better. It's a little off the tourist track, but well worth the trip.
Picture
Travelling to Heron Island by plane. The ferry broke down and there was no other way to get there. I'm glad we had the excuse to fly, to be honest.
Picture
Home away from home. Heron island is too far away from anywhere else to get phone signal, so the only internet is satellite internet in the bar. Every child on the island hangs out there to check Facebook, which means there effectively is no internet. No shit, I tried to bring up Google and it took 5 minutes for the logo to load. Why it didn't just time out and let me escape my misery I don't know.
Picture
This is Shark Bay. There were a million and a half sharks there (I counted), and we swam with them, and they were tame and lovely. Two weeks after we left one of them took a chunk out of kid.

Dickish sharks aside, this place looks like it was made in a computer, even when you're sitting on the warm sand.
Picture
Sunset and a great wreck to snorkel around.

And back home.

I bought DJI Mavic and I’ve been flying it around and getting know how the camera works. I’ll post something when I’ve gotten a little better at it.

Can you see why I might be less inclined to spend time online? I know I promised to come here and blather more, but come on, look at what I did instead.

Having said that, I do actually intend to hang out here more. Despite not posting I can see people still turning up every day, for which I am eternally grateful. I’m going to try and earn that this year, and I’ll tell you all about it in the another post.

Have a great day, and go read a book.
